Steel & Powders Business Unit

Shaping the Future

Steel | Powders

The Steel & Powders Business Unit operates from 4 different sites under the direction of its General Manager, Rudolph Verster who is based at the main Branch in Vanderbijlpark. One of the major key drivers of Rudolph and his team is Branch Best Practices resulting in not only world-class depots but also higher service levels to customers and an SHEQ approach to our staff and customers.

These optimal service levels are constantly addressed and to this end customers have 24-hour access to management at all depots via control rooms operating around the clock.

The Steel & Powders Business Unit has also shown its leadership by keeping abreast with the technology developed by our CargoSolutions division. Software tools such as FleetLogix - a scheduling tool, which caters specifically for the unique South African transport environment, is being used. FleetLogix orders are downloaded electronically and optimally scheduled by contracts controllers. Other systems include Fuel Management System and OnKey.

The combination of all of the above results in Operational Excellence, seamless integration and the partnerships with our customers.

Cargo Carriers has an in-depth knowledge, expertise, and vision and business experience to become the logistics partner of choice within the Steel & Powders Industry. We have the flexibility to cope with industry fluctuations and, our infrastructure and experience is in place to partner our customers through the toughest projects and environments, towards successful and efficient solutions as well as increased productivity and profitability.

The Steel & Powders Business Unit forms an integral part of our Chemical, Fuel and Steel Division headed up by Johan Kruger.

  • Transport Management System - state-of-the-art management systems to minimise fleet costs and increase service levels.

Powders

Positive steps ahead

Cement is by far the fastest growing dimension of our bulk powders portfolio, and our business has been a beneficiary of the growth in cement demand.

Our willingness to invest in new equipment and our investment in capacity at our Vanderbijlpark, Maseru and Bloemfontein branches have positioned us well to support growth within this geography.

New equipment providing greater capacity, has improved turnaround times, reliability, and both maintenance and fuel consumption, all of which make the Bulk Powders Division more competitive.

Big on African experience

At Cargo Carriers, we the experience and capacity to handle major projects throughout the SADC region. Challenging projects in remote areas are something we specialise in, with the Lesotho Highlands water project our most notable success. We have the equipment, expertise and logistical infrastructure to handle the most demanding situations.

Experts at home

The South African powder market also has certain demands and non-negotiable requirements:

  • Empowerment structures - Cargo Carriers is a strong practitioner of empowerment and highly aware of the government requirements that will touch the construction and the powder industry. We believe the levels of black participation and ownership, management and control of our business is a growth imperative.
  • eCargo - the concept of a virtual fleet to augment our capacity is a reality at Cargo Carriers, where we manage capacity through industry fluctuations.
  • Alliance attitude - we link up with true logistics partners within the industry, adding their expertise to our own.
