A high safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ) score is more than a tick in a box or just an expense. For JSE-listed supply chain and logistics service provider Cargo Carriers, SHEQ policy has been a key factor in the surge in growth that the company has experienced recently. Cargo Carriers has been awarded several new contracts, with one of the key factors identified by all the customers as Cargo Carriers’ uncompromising commitment to SHEQ and the company’s resultant high scores. Says chief operating officer Johan Kruger, “Implementing and maintaining high SHEQ scores is a significant expense for companies, particularly those dealing with hazardous materials like ourselves. When it comes to the relationship between governance mandates and profit, they are usually at odds with one another. However, we have shown that SHEQ issues are completely aligned with the opportunity to secure more business and achieve greater profitability. |
