A further 11 Swaziland tractor drivers have been appointed as owner-drivers as a result of the success of Cargo Carriers Swaziland empowerment scheme, which already has five owner-drivers. The aim of the Cargo Carriers owner-driver programme is to empower drivers who would otherwise never have the opportunity to become successful entrepreneurs.
The most important aspects of the programme are the identification and training of suitable candidates and the experience they receive, which in turn they pass on to their families and local communities.
Each is required to employ a co-worker and two shared workers per branch to ensure that they can provide a double-shifted, 24/7 operation for the 8,5 month crop season, deepening the nature of the empowerment programme. All have entered into a 48-month service agreement, with five new drivers based at the Simunye branch, while the remaining six are at the Big Bend branch. |
