Buhle Betfu
Initiated by Cargo Carriers and emerging
farmers in the Shongwe (Malelane) and
Komatipoort area - Buhle Betfu was established.
This R4m empowerment focused sugar cane
transport operation was established in 2002 for small and
emergent growers and is broadly based and designed to grow
community benefits for all and is seen to be unique.
For the 2002 season the company hauled cane
for approximately 900 farmers.
Projection for the 2008 season is estimated
at 1100 growers.
Ten vehicle combinations and two-loaders are allocated for the 2008 season.
As a result of the great success of this empowerment model, the farmers now own 60% of the company.
Buhle Betfu Carriers has also been awarded a significant contract with Sappi Ngodwana Mill for the haulage of timber - a testament of the successful combination of local participants and Cargo Carriers management expertise.
Buhle Betfu Carriers was awarded the highest recognition in South Africa's Supply Chain Management and Logistics industry, the 'Logistics Achiever Awards - Platinum Award' for 2005.
The launch of Buhle Betfu took place at
Mzinti Training College on the 7th June 2003 and marked the
first official handover of payment towards shares in the holding
company by representatives of the 550 cane growers.
